Only eligible persons can request a certified copy of a recent Calcasieu Parish death certificate. The eligible group includes: surviving spouse, parents, adult children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren of the deceased. Attorneys acting for eligible family members, succession representatives with Letters of Testamentary, and insurance beneficiaries with signed policy copies are also eligible.

Requests go to the Louisiana Department of Health Vital Records Registry at 1450 Poydras Street, Suite 400, New Orleans, open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mail requests go to PO Box 60630, New Orleans, LA 70160, and take about 8 to 10 weeks to process. Phone and online orders go through VitalChek at 1-877-605-8562 for an extra fee. Call 337-437-3550 to confirm availability and prepare the right documents before visiting.
Note: Payment by mail to the state registry must be a check or money order. The Vital Records Registry does not accept cash sent through the mail.
Historical Calcasieu Parish Death Records
Death records for Calcasieu Parish from 1911 to 1974 are held at the Louisiana State Archives. The Archives are at 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809. Phone: (225) 922-1206. These microfilmed records are available as certified copies. Pre-1976 deaths are now public records, so any person can request them without proving a family connection.
The Secretary of State's online death index at vitalrecords.sos.la.gov lets you search older deaths for free. Photocopies cost $5 and certified copies are $10, mailed to you. Searching before you order is the most efficient approach since it confirms whether the record exists before you pay. The Louisiana State Archives site explains what records are available and how to submit a request.
Calcasieu Parish is one of the larger parishes in Louisiana, and local resources for genealogy research include the Calcasieu Parish Public Library system and historical newspaper collections from the Lake Charles area. The American Press and older local papers often published detailed obituaries that include biographical information not captured in a formal death certificate. These sources can be especially helpful for deaths before 1911 when no statewide record system existed.
Laws Governing Calcasieu Parish Death Records
The procedures for requesting certified copies of Louisiana death records are set out in La. Admin. Code tit. 48, Section V-11707. Written requests must include the requester's relationship to the deceased, identifying information about the record, and payment by check or money order. The state registrar verifies eligibility before processing any request.
Under RS 44:19, fact of death letters are public records. These letters confirm that a death occurred and can be requested by immediate family members without going through the full certified certificate process. They are useful for certain legal or administrative tasks where a full certificate is not required.
Louisiana's broader public records law (RS 44:31 et seq.) does not override the confidentiality rules in RS 40:41. This means that even though Louisiana generally allows public records requests without stating a reason, death certificates during the 50-year window are still restricted to eligible persons only. Knowing this distinction is important when planning your Calcasieu Parish records request.
