Concordia Parish Death Records and the Law
Louisiana treats death records as confidential for 50 years from the year of the death. This rule is set by RS 40:41. No employee of the state may disclose data from vital records except as authorized by law. Only certain parties can get a certified copy during that window. Those eligible include the surviving spouse, parents, adult children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, insurance beneficiaries with a copy of the policy, succession representatives with a certified letter of testamentary, and attorneys representing eligible parties who submit their request on letterhead with their bar roll number.
All requests must include proof of identity and a description of the requestor's relationship to the deceased. The administrative rules for this process are in La. Admin. Code tit. 48, Section V-11707. That regulation covers what to include in a written request, how to pay, and where to send the application.
If you do not qualify for a full certified copy, a fact of death letter is a public record under RS 44:19. It confirms a death occurred and is available to the spouse, parent, sibling, or child of the deceased. Louisiana's broader open records law, the Sunshine Act (RS 44:31 et seq.), does not override the 50-year confidentiality rule for death certificates.
Louisiana RS 40:41 is the primary statute restricting access to death certificates and sets out who may receive certified copies of vital records like those in Concordia Parish.
Requesting Certified Copies from the State
The Louisiana Vital Records Registry in New Orleans handles state-certified copies. The walk-in address is 1450 Poydras Street, Suite 400, New Orleans, LA 70112. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The mailing address for postal requests is Vital Records Registry, PO Box 60630, New Orleans, LA 70160. Allow 8 to 10 weeks for mail requests to be processed and returned.
A death certificate from the state costs $7.00 plus a $0.50 state charge. The registry does not accept credit cards. Mail requests require a check or money order. For faster service, VitalChek at 1-877-605-8562 handles phone, fax, and online orders, though VitalChek charges additional service fees on top of the state fee.
Note: Concordia Parish residents closer to the Natchez, Mississippi area can also use the mail option to avoid the long drive to New Orleans.
Older Concordia Parish Obituary Records
Deaths from more than 50 years ago are public. The Louisiana State Archives at 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, holds microfilmed death certificates for deaths in Louisiana from 1911 through 1974. Call (225) 922-1206 to ask about research services. For pre-1911 deaths, older parish-level records may exist but coverage varies. The online SOS Death Index allows free searching of deaths more than 50 years old. Copies cost $5 for a photocopy and $10 for a certified copy, both mailed to you. Concordia Parish's location along the Mississippi River and its history as a trading community means older church and cemetery records may also exist through local historical sources and genealogy organizations.
