The Natchitoches Parish Clerk of Court is at 200 Church Street, Room 104, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Hon. David Stamey serves as Clerk. The office handles birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, and a full range of court and legal documents. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Death certificates issued after July 2012 are available at the Clerk's office. Certified copies cost $5.00 each for this service. The office is entirely self-supporting and operates on the fees it collects. No tax funding backs this office, so accurate fee payment is required for all requests. Finding Older Natchitoches Parish Death Records

Deaths that occurred more than 50 years ago are public records in Louisiana. They can be found through the Louisiana State Archives at 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, reachable at (225) 922-1206. The Archives hold microfilmed death certificates for events that occurred between 1911 and 1974. Some older parish-level records may also be on file there.

The Secretary of State also operates the vital records online index at vitalrecords.sos.la.gov. You can search by name for deaths that happened more than 50 years ago and order copies directly from the site. Photocopies cost $5.00 and certified copies cost $10.00, both sent by mail. Administrative rules for requesting certified copies are found in La. Admin. Code tit. 48, § V-11707.

Natchitoches is one of the oldest cities in Louisiana, settled in the early 1700s. The long local history means there are generations of records to work through for family research. Some very old parish records may have been microfilmed or digitized through the Family History Library or similar genealogy projects, which are worth checking alongside official state sources.

Who May Request Natchitoches Parish Death Certificates

Access to death certificates within the 50-year confidentiality period is restricted by state law. Eligible requesters include the surviving spouse, parents, adult children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren of the person named on the certificate. Attorneys and succession representatives can also request records under defined conditions.

Insurance beneficiaries with a signed policy and succession representatives with a certified Letter of Testamentary also qualify under the statute. If you are requesting on behalf of someone else, gather your supporting documents before contacting the office. The Clerk and Vital Records staff will tell you what they need before processing a request.

Fact of death letters are a lighter alternative. Under R.S. 44:19, these letters are public records available to the immediate family of the deceased. They confirm that a death occurred without including all the details in a full certificate. For some purposes, this may be all you need.

Obituary Notices and Natchitoches Parish Newspapers

Obituary notices and official death records are different. Certificates are legal government documents. Obituaries are published by families and funeral homes and appear in local papers. Both can be useful for genealogy and family history research.

Local newspapers serving Natchitoches Parish include the Natchitoches Times and other community papers. Historical issues may be on microfilm at the Natchitoches Parish Library or through the Louisiana State Library system in Baton Rouge. The state library has a genealogy collection that may include indexes to local obituary notices. Some funeral homes in Natchitoches also post current notices on their websites.
