Who Can Access St. Landry Parish Death Records

Louisiana law under RS 40:41 keeps death certificates confidential for 50 years after the year of death. St. Landry Parish follows this rule, as does every parish in Louisiana. A death from 2010 stays restricted until 2061. Access during that window is limited to close family members and authorized parties.

At the St. Landry Parish Clerk's office specifically, only immediate surviving family or beneficiaries can obtain a death certificate. The Clerk requires you to bring a pictured ID. You must also provide your name as applicant, the date of death, the parish or city where the death occurred, the parent's names, and the mother's maiden name. This is more detailed than what some other parish clerks require, so it is worth gathering this information before you visit.

Under RS 44:19, fact of death letters are public. Anyone can request one. They confirm a death occurred but do not include the same level of detail as a certified death certificate. Louisiana's general public records law under RS 44:31 does not override the 50-year restriction for death certificates.

Note: The St. Landry Parish Clerk holds death certificates from the period of 2011 to present. Records before 2011 must be requested from the Louisiana Vital Records Registry.
